Without a doubt, tomatoes are one of the New Zealand’s most-loved foods. Not only are they wonderfully delicious, but they’re a great source of fibre, antioxidant vitamins A, C and the B group vitamins. They also contain vitamin E, potassium and other trace elements.

Fruit and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fibre and are usually low in fat and salt, all of which make them an excellent food choice. Many varieties also contain phytochemicals (natural chemicals) that have valuable antioxidant properties. It is these phytochemicals that give fruit and vegetables their wonderful bright colours.

Fresh ingredients can also be expensive, especially during the winter months, and may be out of season when you want them. If these reasons stop you from getting your recommended daily intake, don’t forget that canned and frozen fruit and vegetables count too!
