Career Story with Wattie’s

I joined Wattie’s at the end of 2016 straight out of university. Funnily enough, my plan was to get into investment banking but who would say no to working with one of NZ’s most iconic brands? I started my career at Wattie’s at the end of 2016 as a Territory Sales Manager, promoted less than a year later to a Key Account Executive. In July 2018 I was promoted again to Account Manager and now work as Senior Category Customer Analyst ANZ.

What motivated you to join us?

Working with one of NZ’s most iconic brands is really what interested me in the first place. Now that I’ve been here for a number of years, it’s the endless learning and the people that I work with on a day to day basis that keeps me going – it really doesn’t feel like I’m working with colleagues, but rather a group of friends!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

In all honesty, learning. Being out of my depth is something that is both challenging but also super rewarding at the same time. Here at Wattie’s, there’s always more opportunities to learn and with ownership being a core value, there is always something else you can sink your teeth into!

Why would you recommend us as a place to work?

I don’t know too many other workplaces where I could have the privilege of working with super smart people I genuinely consider friends. Everyone’s here to support and help out when the going gets tough and here to celebrate when you land your wins. On top of the people, we’re dealing with some of NZ’s favourite brands here and with that comes a lot of responsibility – you see the amount of care we put into our brands here on a daily basis.

What’s your career highlight, what you’re most proud of?

Last year, I grew my portfolio by 40% vs the prior year – I was pretty stoked about that!

What motivates you outside of work? Who inspires you?

Haha this is a bit of a weird one… I would say J. Cole is my inspiration. I’m a major fan of his music and genuinely love what he stands for – just be yourself and when you’re successful, build a bigger table, not a taller fence.

What do you like to do most in your spare time?

Music production.

What’s your favourite product and why?

Honestly, I couldn’t give you a single product that’s my favourite – we make so many amazing things, it’s impossible to pick one. I can tell you that our sauces are my favourite category, I can’t drill down more than that to be honest.

Career Story with Wattie’s

I joined Wattie’s in 2016 as an intern in the Marketing Communications Team. I signed up from the graduate program and completed that in 2017 working in Sales for 6 weeks, then 2 months in Commercial Performance and 4 months in HR. After completing my grad program I rejoined the Comms Team in 2017 and worked in various roles doing Shopper Marketing, looking after Food in a Minute (recipe provider) and Digital Marketing.

I’ve recently been promoted into a Brand Marketing role.

What motivated you to join us?

Working for Wattie’s. The brand dominates practically every aisle of the supermarket and that really attracted me to working at Wattie’s. That and their grad program which was a Management Trainee program that would allow me to have a big learning curve and progress based on merit.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I have exciting projects that require me to work with so many different people. I like project management and my role has plenty of that and is fast paced so there’s always something to do or learn.

Why you’d recommend us as a place to work?

You get exposure to working with a lot of brands and you get to work with amazing people who will band together to get the best results possible!

What’s your career highlight, what you’re most proud of?

In my role as Food in a Minute manager, I got to lauch a new cookbook. I scoped the opportunity and got the backing to bring this project to fruition working with our food editor, nutritionist, food stylist and food photographer to create an amazing cookbook called “The New Everyday”.  It’s was such new territory and every day was a huge learning experience… and I’m proud to say that it’s performing really well!

What motivates you outside of work? Who inspires you?

I am a big foodie, love exploring new cuisines. I’m on a Palestinian buzz right now so every weekend I get friends or family around and cook up something from new cookbooks that I’ve recently purchased.

What do you like to do most in your spare time?

I like to go for long walks, every weekend I challenge myself to go out and do a walk in a new location of Auckland that I haven’t. In summer, I like to go swimming in the beach or lake.

What’s your favourite product and why?

Herbs and spices – I love our Gregg’s herbs and spices because I love from scratch cooking and the flavours you get to play with and cuisines that they lend themselves to are just amazing!

Career Story with Wattie’s

I joined Wattie’s in 2017 when a friend working there recommended an opening role in Foodservice. I have now been with the company for almost 3 years. My first role was in Foodservice as an Account Executive and I was in this role for a year. Then I decided I wanted to expand my scope and explore the Retail side of the business.

I was promoted into an Account Manager role for Woolworths which I work in for a year after which I was then promoted to Senior Account Manager.

What motivated you to join us?

After learning more about the company and the opportunities it could provide, it was a perfect move for my career and to work with brands that I grew up using was also quite special.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The daily challenges that we face which help to grow my development professionally and personally.

Why you’d recommend us as a place to work?

You get to work with such a wide scope of brands and categories that you wouldn’t get to do with any other company in New Zealand, while working with some great people alongside that!

What’s your career highlight, what you’re most proud of?

Recently being promoted to Senior Account Manager and becoming a manager in my short time I have been in Retail.

What motivates you outside of work? Who inspires you?

Woman leaders inspire me - recently the first women CEO of Hellers came to speak at Wattie’s and that was extremely inspiring and further motivates me to never dream short.

What do you like to do most in your spare time?

During summer mainly at the beach with friends and family. I also enjoy reading and trying out new cook books.

What’s your favourite product and why?

Would have to be the new Burger Sauce! I love the chunks of gherkin and it goes with everything.
